A twenty-minute strength routine for crowded weeks

Five moves, one timer, and no equipment you have to go out and buy.

Some weeks there is no hour. There is a gap between dinner and the dishwasher, or a window before everyone else wakes up. This routine is built for that gap.

It uses a timer instead of a rep count, so you can work at whatever pace today allows. You don't need a gym, a mat, or a plan for next week. You need twenty minutes and a bit of floor.

How it works

Set a timer for 40 seconds of work and 20 seconds of rest. Move through the five exercises below in order, then repeat the whole circuit four times. That's twenty minutes, start to finish.

  1. Split squat. One foot forward, one back, lower slowly and stand up. Switch legs halfway through the 40 seconds.
  2. Incline push-up. Hands on a kitchen counter, the back of a sofa, or a sturdy table. The higher your hands, the easier it gets.
  3. Hip hinge with a backpack. Hold a loaded backpack against your chest, push your hips back, and stand tall again.
  4. Doorway row. Hold both sides of a door frame, lean back, and pull yourself toward it.
  5. Dead bug. Lie on your back and slowly extend the opposite arm and leg, keeping your lower back gently on the floor.

Making it easier or harder

The point is to finish feeling like you could have done a little more. If you're wrecked by round two, slow down or take longer rests. If round four feels easy, add a pause at the bottom of each squat or hold the backpack higher.

The best routine is the one you'll still be doing in March.

When to do it

Twice a week is a reasonable place to start. Put it on the calendar like any other appointment, and give it a fallback slot in case the first one gets eaten by something else.

If something hurts in a sharp or unusual way, stop. If you're returning after an injury or have a health condition, check with a doctor or physiotherapist before starting something new.

That's the whole routine. It won't win any awards. It will fit into a Tuesday.
